True Story:

At the height of World War II, in 1942, the British Navy had a sudden breakdown in radio communications. The British became convinced that it was a German trick. It turned out to be disturbances caused by sunspots over 93 million miles away.

Q. Does the moon have a dark side?

A. The moon does have a far side which is impossible to see from the earth, but it doesn't mean that it's always dark. Each side of the moon is dark for no longer than 15 days at a time.

Q. Where does sound come from?

A. The air is always filled with sound waves. All things give off vibrations, but some have a low frequency which most cannot hear. The reason: it may take 3 minutes to make a single vibration. They may be caused by earthquakes and storms.

Q. Are earthquakes caused by the lining up of the planets in our solar system?

A. This question can be answered through gravity. A body's gravitational influence drops with the square of its distance. The larger and farther away planets of the solar system are too far away to cause a noticeable effect. Even the planet Jupiter is to far away to have an effect.

Q. Does it only take sunlight 8 minutes to reach Earth?

A. After a photon is created, it becomes absorbed and will be emitted in random directions. It will travel through more than 400,000 miles of plasma. It will take 30,000 years to make it to the surface of the sun. After this, it will take 8 minutes to get to Earth.

Q. Do toilets flush counterclockwise north of the equator and clockwise south of the equator?

A. You're probably thinking of the Coriolis effect which is created by the Earth's rotation. This effect influences the direction of cyclones which are counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. The toilet, or sink, is too small to experience this effect. The way the water spins in toilets, tubs and sinks depends on how water flows in and how you pull the plug out.
