Terrarium of Woodland Creatures
by Jeanette Cain
Study nature inside your home by building a woodland terrarium. You will need to have an aquarium tank with a lid, soil and dirt, pinecones, small dead limbs, a trowel or small digging shovel, spray bottle, and a shallow bowl. In addition, you need to find leaves, and small animals, such as beetles, millipedes, snails, etc. You will really need a parent or adult for some help.
What is a terrarium? It is a home that allows small land animals to live in and survive. Your terrarium will provide food for them to eat, fresh drinking water, and a place for the animals to hide when they need time alone. This terrarium is for animals and insects that live within the region around your home.
The first step is to fill one corner of the terrarium with wood, and dead leaves. The leaves let the animals hide and the wood lets the animals climb.
The rest of the terrarium will be filled with the soil and dirt, plus a few pinecones. The shallow bowl is to be placed in the soil with the soil reaching the top lip of the bowl. After the bowl is placed inside, fill it with water. You may need to sprinkle water over the tank to keep it damp.
If you have placed the limbs, or branches in a sloping manner, you can watch the animals crawl up and down. Now, you can add the small animals that you have found and provide them with a new home.
If you have put small snails in the terrarium, you will need to feed them fresh food, such as lettuce. If you have put larger animals in the terrarium, you will need to research the type of foods they eat and how often.
The top will need to leave a small gap for oxygen and ventilation. To keep your terrarium clean, use a damp cloth to wipe it down. Now you can study nature and have fun at the same time. Good luck!

Keep a bit of summer in your home all year long by making a terrarium. A terrarium is a small, indoor garden held in a glass container. You can purchase a terrarium already planted, or construct your own by buying the container, soil and plants from floral shops and other retail stores. Companies that make glass terrariums offer many sizes and shapes . Or, make your own from old aquariums, glass jars, etc.
